United States Marine Corps; 1993-1997.  Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, S-2 for mixed fixed and rotory Air Group, and then for a SOC Medium Helo squadron of the same group.

Nasty nasty nasty range on K-Bay.  Picture a gently upwards sloping range out to the 500 yd line.  About 100 yds behind that, climbs a steep 40 foot wall of a volcano.  The range is inside of a dormant volcano; and here is the key:  1/4 of the circle of the volcano is exposed to the sea by cliffs that go straight down into the surf.

The winds are...insane.  They hoist range flags on both ends of every yard line and the firing line.  At any given moment, all 8 flags are pointed in different directions, with different angles to the ground.  I hit expert in boot camp, but it wasn't until my 3rd year I hit expert in K-Bay.
